Today Tank World looks an exclusive look at one of the most exciting developments in the Middle East for our industry – the Basra Oil and Gas International Free Zone. The Agreement for this public private partnership between the Iraqi Free Zone Authority and BIOGH was signed in September 2012 with the specific aim of building a fully-integrated oil and gas logistics facility in the Free Zone at Khor Al Zubair in the Basra Governorate, Iraq.
The specialised Free Zone will cover 11million square metres and be located next to Iraq’s strategic oil and gas port in Khor Al-Zubair. The Zone will provide a mixed-use site for manufacturing and storage and fulfil the increasing requirements of Iraq’s oil and gas sector.
The project is projected to employ and train between 10,000 to 15,000 local employees and professionals for the long-term benefit of the local Iraqi communities. The Basra Oil and Gas International Free Zone will provide a broad range of tenants with the highest quality facilities, state of-the-art security and technology, and excellent transportation access and convenience. There will also be a variety of residential accommodation.
Tenants will have the option of either renting land and building their own facilities or they will be able to rent complete buildings. Such facilities will be supported by dedicated customs and immigration services and a full range of life and business support offerings.
That part of the site closest to Zubair port is planned for oil tank storage and there is much interest from a number of companies either active in or looking at the importing of refined fuels and related products.
The Free Zone’s facilities are in close proximity to the four super giant oilfields:
- Rumaila – 85km away – operated by BP
- West Qurna – 110km away – Phase I operated by
Exxon Mobil/Shell and Phase II by Lukoil
- Zubair – 35km away – operated by ENI
- Majnoon – 125km away – operated by Shell
